About the Artist

Rick Roco is a San Francisco-based contemporary American painter working primarily in oil on canvas. His practice brings together pop surrealism and psychological figuration, transforming recognizable characters and imagined beings into studies of identity, emotion, and the ways people present themselves to the world.

His figures are stylized yet carefully articulated, balancing exaggeration with precise gestures and expressions. Posture, scale, and spatial relationships become part of the narrative, suggesting feelings that remain unspoken. A character can appear playful at first glance while revealing vulnerability, unease, or tension through closer observation.

Roco’s compositions combine expressive color with a controlled sense of structure. His palettes establish emotional tone, while the arrangement of figures and surrounding space directs attention toward relationships within the painting. Surreal imagery gives these encounters an unfamiliar quality without separating them from recognizable human experience.

Within the traditions of pop surrealism, Roco uses fantasy as a means of psychological observation. His work considers the distance between outward appearance and inner experience: how identity is constructed, how emotion is concealed, and how social expectations influence behavior. Rather than resolving these tensions into a single explanation, his paintings leave room for viewers to bring their own associations.

Roco is represented by Emerald Thinker Gallery.
