Lucian Poe
Atmospheric Landscape Painting
Read full biographyAbout the Artist
Lucian Poe (b. 1999, Pasadena, California) is a Los Angeles-based contemporary American painter whose landscapes explore the relationship between atmosphere, memory, and emotional experience. Working in water-mixable oils on canvas, he uses slow-drying mediums and successive layers of glazing to create luminous, softly veiled surfaces.
Shaped in part by a formative journey through the rural Midwest, Poe approaches landscape as both a physical environment and a psychological space. Hazy horizons and filtered light suggest the ways memory alters perception, allowing familiar places to carry feelings of grief, inheritance, and uncertainty.
His series Bruised Light examines illumination changed by atmospheric interference. Within these paintings, environmental distortion becomes a metaphor for the traces left by lived experience. Poe’s practice connects close observation of the American landscape with an exploration of its emotional resonance.
- Atmosphere and emotion: Skies, haze, and light that suggest an inner emotional state.
- Memory and inheritance: Landscapes carrying traces of personal history and inherited experience.
- Clarity and distortion: Filtered illumination exploring the tension between what is seen and what is remembered.
- Grief and resilience: Quiet landscapes that evoke loss, endurance, and emotional change.
- Environmental tension: Polluted light and altered horizons connecting environmental conditions with psychological experience.
- Layering and time: Successive oil glazes creating depth and suggesting the gradual accumulation of memory. www.issuewire.com
